The Construction and Housing and Communal Services Inspectorate has issued a permit to demolish the constructive building of the former hotel and industrial technical school in Chirchik, the city administration reported.
Earlier, Alerte Heritage activists called for the preservation of this unique building in Uzbekistan in the post-constructivist style. They recalled that specialists from the Tashkent Institute of General Planning recommended including the 1934 building in the list of architectural monuments of the first (highest) category. However, in 2019, the former hotel building was not recognized as a tangible cultural heritage site. For more than 15 years, it was in an abandoned state.
Eventually, the historic building was deemed dilapidated. In its place, it is planned to build a Chinese innovative gymnasium, which will accommodate children from 500 families. Soniya Group Limited intends to attract $15 million in direct foreign investment for the project implementation.
The decision to demolish the building caused ambiguous public reaction, as it is part of the region's architectural heritage. Nevertheless, the authorities emphasize that the new educational facility will be an important step in the development of the city's infrastructure. At the same time, videos of active work on the demolition of the facility are already circulating on social networks.
