The restoration of the ancient predator took several years. Scientists analyzed DNA extracted from well-preserved remains: a 72,000-year-old skull found in Idaho and a 13,000-year-old tooth found in Ohio.
Based on these data, gray wolf cells were genetically modified - in just 20 stages, with emphasis on recreating the main characteristics of direwolves: large build, strong muscles, and thick white fur. These cells were introduced into the egg cells of domestic dogs, and the surrogate mothers were the breeds of hounds.
As a result of the experiment, three wolf cubs were born. The two males were named Romul and Rem, and the female - Khalisi.
Writer George Martin, author of "Game of Thrones," reacted emotionally to the news on social media: "THE DIREWOLF IS BACK!" He also said that he got acquainted with the project at the initiative of director Peter Jackson.
Now the animals live in the nature reserve and are under the supervision of scientists. According to experts, six-month-old Romul and Rem are already 25% larger than ordinary grey wolves.
Colossal stated that it considers this project the beginning of a new era in biotechnology and the return of extinct species.
