Gulnara Ivanova has directed a film based on Stephen King's story as part of the Dollar Baby program, which allows students and aspiring directors to adapt the writer's works for just $1 a film. Her film won first place in the "Best Thriller" category at the Nitiin International Film Festival in Malaysia.
"The Secret in Their Eyes" — Juan José Campanella
Argentine crime drama with elements of a thriller, directed by Juan José Campanella. The film is based on Eduardo Sacery's novel "The Question in Their Eyes" and has become one of the most successful films in the history of Argentine cinema.
"Thanks to this film, I fell in love with thrillers in general. Especially the thrillers from Spain and Argentina," the director emphasized.
"The Green Mile" — Frank Darabont
The film unfolds in the 1930s in an American maximum-security prison. The main character is overseer Paul Edgecombe, who works at a suicide block nicknamed "Green Mile" due to the color of the floor. Everything changes when a new prisoner is brought there - John Coffey, a huge black man convicted of the brutal murder of two girls.
"This is the first film where I decided to make a directorial analysis and understood how much depth there really is in this film," Ivanova said.
"Se7en" — David Fincher
Detectives from the police department of an unnamed, gloomy city - Mills (young and hot-tempered) and Somerset (experienced and disappointed in life) - receive a murder case. Soon it becomes clear that this is not a single crime, but a carefully planned series inspired by seven mortal sins: gluttony, greed, laziness, lust, pride, envy, and anger.
"Seven of them combined what attracts me in cinema: the thriller, the Noir style, Morgan Freeman, and the fact that in the film they didn't go to the usual ending, where the main characters emerge victorious from all the commotion like Hollywood. That is, the ending there is more realistic, lively," Ivanova said.
