More than 80 countries from all continents co-authored the document.
The initiative is based on President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's proposal to honor the memory of the deceased and remind about the importance of global cooperation in disaster risk reduction. For the first time, the new International Day will be celebrated on April 29, 2026, the 60th anniversary of the devastating 1966 Tashkent earthquake.
The resolution emphasizes that earthquakes, although they constitute a smaller proportion among natural disasters, often cause the largest human and economic losses. The UN calls on member states, UN system agencies, and international organizations to facilitate events within the framework of the new day - through information campaigns, education, and strengthening preparedness for emergencies.
