The coin bears the inscription "Twrk x'γ'n," which translates to "Turk Khagan." Scientists believe that the artifact belonged to the Western Kokturk Khaganate and may be related to the descendants of Istemi Khagan - one of the founders of the Turkic Empire.
The unique find was made by Professor, Doctor of Sciences, Gaybulla Boboyorov - a researcher at the National Archaeological Center of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
Despite its modest appearance, the coin has great historical significance. According to researchers, this may be the most ancient material fixation of the ethnonym "Turk." Until now, the first mention of this term has been associated with the inscriptions of Kul-Tegin and Bilge-Kagan dated to the 8th century.
The coin is believed to date back to the 580-610s and demonstrates the early spread of Turkic statehood and culture in Central Asia.
