It is known that the album was presented to the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, who at that time headed the Russian Geographical Society. Perhaps it was created as part of research and educational projects actively supported by members of the imperial family.
The photographs made by amateur photographer V. F. Kozlovsky in the 1880s-1890s deserve special attention. His works are distinguished by their characteristic style: printed in warm sepia, they are glued to white passport with exquisite gold vignettes on the corners and a name imprint in the lower right corner - "V. F. Kozlovsky."
The album is an important testament to the visual development and documentation of Turkestan at the end of the 19th century. Today, it is part of a rare collection of visual materials reflecting the interest of Russian science and aristocracy in the regions of Central Asia.
