Glass plates are used in collotics, so the award was named "Hariban": "Hari" means glass plate, and "ban" means printed plate in Japanese. Both professionals and amateurs can participate in the contest by sending black and white photos. The winners are carefully selected by a jury consisting of international photo curators, publishers, and artists. The Grand Prix winner will be invited to a two-week residence in Kyoto, Japan, to collaborate with master printers from the Benrido company.

The Grand Prix winner will work with a printing master from the Benrido Collootype atelier during his stay in Kyoto in October 2025. In close cooperation with the masters, he will create eight colleotype prints of his victorious works.
