The incident occurred near the painting "Ferdinando de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany" (c. 1695-1700), painted by Italian Baroque artist Anton Domenico Gabbiani.
According to the museum, the man stumbled on a platform designed to limit the distance between visitors and the artwork. As a result, a hole formed in the painting. The moment of the incident was captured by surveillance cameras and published in local media and social networks.
Despite the damage being deemed "relatively insignificant," the exhibition was temporarily closed until July 2nd. The painting will undergo restoration and then return to the exposition, which, as planned, will be open until November 28.
Uffizi Gallery Director Simone Verde issued a statement condemning the frivolous behavior of museum visitors:
"The problem of people coming to museums for memes and selfies is becoming widespread. We will establish clear restrictions to prevent behavior incompatible with respect for our institutions and cultural heritage."
He also added that the tourist was immediately identified and will be held accountable.
