JFK Airport transforms into a museum: art meets passengers right at the gangway

New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport is preparing to surprise the world: International Terminal 6 is set to become a space where passengers will be welcomed not only by planes and airport staff, but also by works of art. The project, developed in collaboration with leading cultural institutions of the city, promises to transform JFK into a true open-air museum.

Art Program Participants:

• American Museum of Natural History will present a visual collage of its most iconic exhibits — from a Tyrannosaurus skeleton to the figure of Papa Nui and other interactive elements.
• Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts will create an impressive 140-foot mural combining music, theater, dance, and architecture — a visual symphony of the urban stage.
• The Metropolitan Museum of Art will showcase images of key works from its 17 collections — from the Unicorn Tapestries to a Dior costume.
• The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) will collaborate with Yoko Ono on an installation titled PEACE is POWER, inspired by her work on peace and activism.

Why It Matters

For millions of passengers, JFK will become more than just a point of arrival — it will be their first encounter with New York’s cultural diversity. The project is already being described as a new standard for how art can be integrated into the infrastructure of a global metropolis.

Timeline

• The first phase of the terminal will open in 2026, together with part of the artistic installations.
• Full completion of construction is scheduled for 2028.

All featured works will become part of a permanent exhibition in the international arrivals area, which has already received the unofficial name “Museum Row.”

The collection will be expanded with nineteen large-scale public art installations commissioned by Public Art Fund, as well as rotating exhibitions by Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning featuring artists from Queens.

As a result, JFK is gaining a new status — not just one of the largest airports in the United States, but a cultural project of global significance, where the boundaries between travel and art begin to dissolve even before passengers exit the terminal.
