Uzbekistan Launches New School of Calligraphy

The seminar brought together leading specialists in Islamic art, history and philology, serving as an important platform for comprehensive discussion of the spiritual and cultural significance of calligraphy. International experts highly praised the initiative.

The creation of the School of Calligraphy is a logical continuation of the large-scale reforms aimed at preserving and popularising our country's cultural heritage, noted Firdavs Abdukhalikov in his address to participants.

Speakers highlighted that calligraphy reached an exceptional level of development during the Timurid era and became a symbol of cultural flourishing. According to research presented by scholars, after establishing a centralised state, Amir Timur brought together the finest calligraphers from various regions in the capital. Scripts such as thuluth, nasta'liq and Kufic reached their peak during this period. Outstanding masterpieces were created, including the celebrated Baysunghur Quran manuscript.

The School of Calligraphy is expected to function not only as an educational institution, but also as a research and cultural centre. Its activities will include specialist training, the preservation and restoration of manuscript heritage, and the development of international cooperation.
