Shukhrat Abdumalikov was born in Samarkand in 1970. His early fascination with theatre and the visual arts largely shaped the course of his artistic development. After graduating from the P. P. Benkov Republican College of Art in Tashkent in 1989, he continued his studies in the Department of Theatre Design at the Tashkent Institute of Theatre and Fine Arts. A defining influence on his development as an artist was the school of Georgy Robertovich Brim, one of the leading reformers of scenography in Uzbekistan.

Early Practice
As fate would have it, Abdumalikov became one of the master's last and favourite pupils, inheriting the principles of his artistic school. His professional career began while he was still a student, when he worked as a production designer at the Tashkent Theatre for Young Audiences and the Abror Khidoyatov Theatre. After graduating from the institute, he joined the Department of Theatre Design as a lecturer, where he later became a professor and one of Uzbekistan's leading mentors of young scenographers.

Scenography as Artistic Environment
Abdumalikov's artistic approach is based on the understanding of scenography as an independent artistic system. Spatial composition, colour and lighting shape not only the visual character of a production but also its emotional and conceptual structure, transforming the stage into an active participant in the dramatic action.
