The architect sees form.
The developer sees investment potential.
The manufacturer sees opportunities to apply their products.
The municipality sees the fulfilment of state objectives.
The resident sees everyday convenience.

Most professional solutions revolve around the object itself. Yet it is functions that reveal its true capabilities and determine its potential for use. The object itself remains unchanged. Only the approach to its analysis shifts.
In the course of my research, I have formulated the concept of the 'functional system of the urban environment'. This is not a new classification of urban objects. It is a tool for professional analysis of the urban environment. This is the fundamental difference between the two approaches. Classification answers the question 'What is it?', while the functional system answers 'What does it allow us to do?'

It is here that new possibilities begin to emerge.
The architect designs not only space, but also the system of its use.
The developer increases the value of a project not only by constructing new buildings, but also by expanding the functions of existing spaces.
The manufacturer creates solutions not for a specific type of object, but for its functions, thereby broadening the product line and the market for application.
The municipality gains a tool that helps address several urban challenges through a single object, thus enhancing the efficiency of public investment.
The resident enjoys a diverse and convenient urban environment without the constant need to create new spaces.

The functional approach does not negate the existing design system; rather, it supplements it with a new level of analysis. It helps to see potential that already exists but is rarely the subject of professional discussion. Here, the opportunity arises to expand the ways in which the urban environment is used.
The functional approach allows us to see and utilise opportunities that already exist within the urban environment but are seldom incorporated into design solutions. Therefore, the functional system of the urban environment is not merely a new term. It is a tool that enables us to unlock the potential of the existing city far beyond its conventional purpose.

The object determines what is built. The function determines what possibilities this creates.
