How to Get into Rock Music: A Guide for Those Who Don’t Know Where to Start

Many people are wary of rock music, associating it with mysticism or dismissing it as “demonic music”. This myth has been around for decades. Today, rock has spread far beyond the Old World and become one of the major musical genres, ranging from light rock ’n’ roll to heavy metal. Moreover, many songs have become iconic thanks to their use in certain films and television series.
How Rock Was Born
The history of the genre begins with the arrival of enslaved Africans in America. Their musical traditions gave rise to genres such as jazz, blues and gospel, among others. Their songs gave voice to the hardships of life, unrequited love, emotional experiences and everyday struggles. Blues, soul and rhythm and blues laid the foundations for rock.
The roots of the blues can be traced back to the 16th century. During this period, large numbers of enslaved Africans were brought to America. Life was extremely difficult for them. Their emotions and stories of hardship gradually found expression in music, turning lived experience into musical storytelling.
The name of the genre is often linked to the English expression “blue devils”, which refers to a feeling of melancholy or the blues. The main instruments traditionally associated with the blues are the guitar, piano, drums and harmonica.
Rhythm and blues, or the familiar R&B, emerged in the mid-1940s and reached its heyday in the 1950s. Unlike the blues, it replaced melancholy with energy and a strong sense of rhythm made for dancing. Its leading instruments included bass, drums, piano, guitar and saxophone.
Soul appeared in the 1950s from rhythm and blues. The genre draws on the traditions of Christian spiritual music, particularly gospel, with a strong emphasis on emotion and feeling. The core instruments remained largely unchanged, with the organ added to the mix.
The Emergence of Rock Music as a Genre
The term rock comes from the English verb meaning “to rock” or “to sway” and is a shortened form of rock ’n’ roll, the genre from which it evolved. The melodic, rhythmic and dance-oriented qualities of earlier styles gradually gave way to a louder, more powerful sound shaped by amplified instruments.
As in blues and soul, drums and guitars remained the main instruments, while the piano was increasingly replaced by synthesisers. Acoustic guitars gave way to bass and electric guitars, and vocal techniques became more sophisticated. The music grew heavier, but the message behind the songs remained much the same. As in blues and other genres, loss, emotion, life experiences, difficult choices, freedom and many other themes became the foundation of this new sound.
Alongside its core instruments, rock music also incorporates classical ones, including the cello, violin, flute and organ. Some rock musicians even perform with orchestras. Examples include the band Aria and Serj Tankian. Tashkent also hosts SymphoRock concerts featuring iconic rock songs.
The Main Styles of Rock Music
Rock encompasses around 50 major genres and more than 100 subgenres. And that is by no means the limit: the genre continues to evolve, with new subgenres constantly emerging. Let’s take a look at some of the main styles.
Rock ’n’ Roll
Rock ’n’ roll took shape in the 1940s and 1950s, bringing together elements of rhythm and blues and country music. Piano and saxophone were among its leading instruments, later joined and increasingly replaced by the guitar. It is a highly danceable style, defined by a strong rhythm and fast tempo.
Popular artists include Elvis Presley, known as the King of Rock ’n’ Roll, and Chuck Berry. Notable bands include The Beatles, The Who and The Rolling Stones.

Blues Rock
Blues rock is a hybrid of rock and blues that began to develop in the 1960s. It draws on classic blues elements, given a heavier sound through electric and bass guitars and drum kits. Short songs developed into longer pieces, giving musicians more room to showcase their guitar skills.
Popular bands include Led Zeppelin, The Yardbirds and The Animals.
Hard Rock
Hard rock grew out of blues rock in the 1960s and hit its stride in the 1970s. The basic instrumentation remained much the same as in other forms of rock, while the sound became heavier, with greater emphasis on powerful guitar riffs and melody.
Popular bands include Deep Purple, AC/DC, Aerosmith, Kiss, Scorpions, Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi and Queen.
Heavy Metal
Heavy metal was the first major offshoot of metal. It developed from hard rock in the 1970s. For a long time, the terms hard rock and heavy metal were used almost interchangeably. Over time, however, heavy metal established itself as a genre in its own right, eventually giving rise to dozens of subgenres, including black metal, power metal, death metal and many others.
Popular bands include Black Sabbath, Motörhead, Manowar, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Aria and Master.
Progressive rock
Progressive rock emerged in the 1960s and flourished between 1970 and 1975. Complex arrangements, lengthy compositions, intricate rhythmic patterns, shifts in tempo and dynamics, the use of classical instruments such as the flute, orchestras, and much more — all of this allows for a unique sound distinct from others.
Popular rock bands: Pink Floyd, Kansas, The Dear Hunter, Yes, King Crimson, Dream Theatre.
Alternative rock
It took shape in the 1980s but gained fame in the 1990s and 2000s. Alt-rock, also known as “the alternative,” is associated with the underground. Initially, the genre included those who sought to stand out from existing styles. The movement became an umbrella term, as “alternative” encompasses a vast number of subgenres, such as industrial rock, nu-metal, grunge, and indie rock. The music is also distinguished by guitar riffs, dynamics, and the presence of extreme vocals. Alongside the core instruments (electric and bass guitars, drums, synthesiser), classical instruments such as the violin are also used.
Popular rock bands: 30 Seconds To Mars, Coldplay, The Killers, Linkin Park.
Grunge
Grunge, or the Seattle sound, originated in the American city of Seattle. It is a substyle of the main movement — alternative rock. Despite emerging as early as the 1980s, its commercial success came in the early to mid-1990s. The genre is characterised by dark lyrics and an abundance of distortion in the melody. From English, “grunge” translates as “dirt.” That is precisely what the musicians sought to convey — to reveal the realities of life.
Popular bands: Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden.
In addition to the genres listed above, this category also includes operatic rock, rock operas, and concerts with symphony orchestras.
From the Classics to the Modern
There is no clear dividing line between classic and modern rock. Classic rock is often associated with bands from the 1960s to the 1980s, while modern rock is generally linked to music from the late 1990s and early 2000s onwards.
Rock musicians of earlier generations often stood out for their striking and extravagant costumes, bold make-up, particularly in glam rock, and distinctive hairstyles.
Modern rock is distinctive not only in its sound, but also in its new genres and vocal styles. When it comes to appearance, however, many 21st-century rock bands no longer feel the need to dress extravagantly. Performers often take the stage in relatively simple clothes: a black tank top or T-shirt, comfortable black trousers, neatly styled hair and minimal make-up. The lyrics have also become more introspective, often taking the form of personal stories and fragments of lived experience.
Vocalists experiment not only with melody, rhythm and harmony, but also with new approaches to vocal performance. This has given rise to extreme vocal techniques such as growling, which require particular care and precise control of breathing, the voice and pronunciation.
The bands mentioned above represent only part of the many popular acts associated with classic rock. Other iconic names include Metallica, KoЯn, Alice in Chains, Oasis, Europe, Def Leppard, The Sisters of Mercy, Twisted Sister and Van Halen.
Modern rock includes Rammstein, Black Veil Brides, Nickelback, System of a Down, Apocalyptica, Three Days Grace, Billy Talent, Bad Omens, The Rasmus, Nightwish, Bring Me the Horizon, Slipknot, Asking Alexandria, My Chemical Romance, 3 Doors Down and many others.
How to Find Yourself in Rock Songs
Every rock song is a world of its own, centred on a particular person. It tells a life story, whether their own or that of someone they know, drawing on experiences they have lived through. Of course, similar themes also appear in dance music, including pop and R&B. For rock listeners, however, the genre can become a way of working through their own emotions. Songs often explore loneliness, freedom, loss and the search for identity. This is why so many listeners find emotional support in rock music.
To discover which style speaks to you most, start by listening to different bands and exploring different genres. Pay attention to the lyrics. Learning how a song was created and discovering the musicians’ stories can also help you understand its meaning on a deeper level. In the end, everyone finds something of their own.
Where to Start with Rock Music
So where should you start? First, think about which era is most likely to inspire you and appeal to your taste.
You might begin with rock acts from the 1970s and 1980s, such as Queen, AC/DC, Kiss, Foreigner, Metallica, Bon Jovi and Kansas. Many of their songs have featured in films, including Rocky (Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger”), Highlander (Queen’s “Princes of the Universe”) and even The Avengers (Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song”).
Kiss’s best-known song, “I Was Made for Lovin’ You”, was originally written as a playful experiment in a more pop-oriented style. It went on to become a worldwide hit and remains one of the band’s most recognisable songs. There are no particularly heavy riffs, and the melody itself is far removed from what one might typically expect from hard rock.
You could also start with The Beatles, whose music brought together rock ’n’ roll, pop and psychedelic rock. The British rockers also stood out from many of their contemporaries with their distinctive suits. Their best-known song is “Yesterday”.
Modern pop rock and pop-punk rock share many melodic qualities with contemporary pop music. They include upbeat, danceable tracks such as Fall Out Boy’s “Dance, Dance” and “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race”.
You could also explore pop-punk rock through Panic! at the Disco, whose songs vary widely in mood, from “The Ballad of Mona Lisa” and the cult favourite “I Write Sins, Not Tragedies” to “Viva Las Vengeance” and the breakout hit “High Hopes”.
Ballads are a world of their own in rock music. They can be about dreams, hopes, love and even fairy tales. You could start with songs by Aria such as “Lost Paradise”, “Up There” and “Shtil”. Another option is Epidemia, which is likely to appeal particularly to Tolkien fans, thanks to the many songs in their repertoire inspired by The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. Good places to start include “Rider of Ice”, “There Is No Death” and “Romance of a Tear”. Although Epidemia’s main subgenre is power metal, their songs are dynamic and lyrical, with a sound that conveys the right emotions and atmosphere.
Folk rock draws on folk songs and traditional music, giving them a distinctive sound. Examples include the Russian bands Korol i Shut and Melnitsa, and, from the West, The Byrds.
Among Uzbek bands, Bu Qala stands out as an underground band performing in Uzbek. Krylya Origami incorporates elements of reggae, punk jazz and, in my view, even rock ’n’ roll, while KUKI Band, a rock ’n’ roll group from Samarkand, represents alternative rock.
Rock and Roll Can Never Die
Many people listen to rock songs without even realising it. They are often played as background music in films and television series. Take Supernatural, for example: throughout all 15 seasons, the series features iconic classic rock songs. They may not stand out much to viewers who are unfamiliar with the genre. And this is just one example.
Rock music is a musical genre like any other. There is nothing inherently mystical about it, despite what many people believe. Every band experiments with different styles, and there is hardly a band that sticks strictly to a single genre. One band might explore glam rock, heavy metal, pop rock, pop-punk or alternative rock. There is nothing wrong with that, because it is through such experimentation that new music is born.
